A Personal Approach

The project of Mr. A.N.I.

The vastness of landscapes within a dial

A landscape never reveals exactly the same face twice. Throughout the day, its contours and colours evolve for those who take the time to observe them.

This ever-changing spectacle inspired the bespoke personalization imagined for Mr. A.N.I. A lover of vast natural landscapes, he retains a vivid memory of the purple alpine lakes, whose reflections shift between turquoise, violet and green as the light changes throughout the day.

For the personalization of his watch with Artisans de Genève, he wished to recreate this same sense of movement through the traditional art of guilloché. A timepiece conceived to interact with light, reveal new shades and offer a different emotion with every glance.

Watch parts, sketches, and design tools arranged on a dark surface beside a watch drawing.

To reveal ever-changing colours, guilloché was the obvious choice. It is a craft that allows no approximation: every pass of the tool sculpts the pattern to within a tenth of a millimetre. Seeing this absolute precision expressed on my own dial was a truly unique emotion.

Focus On Modifications

Hand-guilloché: a technical excellence

For Mr. A.N.I's personalization, the dial was entirely hand-guilloché with an exceptionally precise motif, creating reliefs that catch the light and change appearance depending on the viewing angle. The result combines technical excellence with artistic expression, perfectly reflecting the vision of this passionate collector of fine watchmaking.

To meet our client’s desire for a sense of movement, Artisans de Genève applied a MorphoColor® treatment. Its principle is comparable to the multilayer technologies used in high-end automotive paints, where successive layers create colours that shift depending on the angle of observation. The dial therefore reveals shades of turquoise, violet and green that seem to transform with every movement of the wrist.

A moonphase complication

To retain the poetic touch our client was looking for, Artisans de Genève added a moonphase complication. Visible through an aperture cut into the dial, the disc gradually rotates throughout the month, displaying the different phases of the moon. Crafted from blue aventurine and complemented by a mother-of-pearl insert, this complication echoes the interplay of light brought to life by the guilloché while extending the watch's overall aesthetic.

Mastering contrasts

The bezel is fitted with a brushed grey ceramic insert. Renowned for its scratch resistance and matte finish, this material frames the dial without competing with it. Rather than reflecting light, it absorbs it, highlighting the shimmering reflections created by the guilloché.

Other Modifications

Case

The caseband has been entirely laser-engraved to give it a grained texture, enriching the interplay of materials.

Oscillating weight

The Art of Guilloché

"When you start a piece, you must see it through to the end. It's about patience. You cannot stop event if it takes 3 or 4 hours. You cannot get up from the machine. So it's true that it's also a whole training of the body and mind.", Yann Von Kaenel - Guilloché at Artisans de Genève

Guilloché is far more than decoration. It is a traditional decorative technique in which the craftsman's hand guides a mechanical engine to engrave intricate patterns.
